INvasion (Thomas Kydd) September 5, 2010 Dr. E. M. Russell (Scotland) This is the tenth in the series and I intend to read them all; they aer well written, historically authentic and enjoyable.
Invasion (Thomas Kydd series) August 27, 2010 J. Warren (Dorset, England) Julian Stockwin came up with an unusual story line for this "Kydd" book. Very enjoyable read - as are all of the "Kydd" series
invasion July 23, 2010 Mrs. A. R. Fitzgerald (Kent, England) The book was purchased from Amason for my husband at half the price of high street shops. The book was up to the standard of all Julian Stockwin books, it was delivered within two days of ordering. He has read and enjoyed it and is now about to start the next one in the series
Not a bad read but a little disappointing June 23, 2010 Maccoll Hamish (France) Submarines etc.. I'm sure that this episode in history has been covered in detail by at least one other Naval fiction writer. It's the boats, the tactics, the sea battles and the battles between personalities that I enjoy and although the last is there in this book the others are not so while the book is well written - it's a little dull in my opinion.
Submarines ! December 12, 2009 Mr. Owen Dunsire (Athenry, Galway, Eire) 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
Julian Stockwin and his Kydd series of books are right at the top of the list for books of this type (Historical Naval) alongside Dudley Pope's Ramage series. Stockwin has again managed to introduce the life between decks to the story while still concentration on the main characters at the stern. This time we have Submarines and Torpedoes in Napoleonic Naval Warfare - no, the author has not lost it ! This is actually based on true events and the demonstration of "Nautilus" the first ever submersible ship (in France, before Napoleon). The torpedoes however are more like mines and unpowered, being towed into position.
The plot, in general, revolves around Renzi trying to lure the inventor (Fulton, an American) away from the French to Britain and then Kydd being assigned to help Fulton devise his new "toys" of destruction against some very strong opposition from the Admiralty. Finally they are used against the French invasion Flotilla but with very little success.
No major engagements but a few skirmishes, perhaps a little too much diplomacy but overall a good read. Overall mark 8.5/10.
