Product Description
In the wake of September 11, Changez, a Pakistani man in Manhattan, finds his position in the city he loves suddenly overturned, and his budding relationship with Erica eclipsed by the reawakened ghosts of her past. Changez's own identity is in seismic shift as well, unearthing allegiances more fundamental than money, power, and perhaps even love.

4 out of 5 stars An interesting read   August 30, 2010
Ms. S. Nurgat (London)
I definitely recommend this book as it perfectly captures the dilemmas of foreigners coming to live in Western countries, who are both attracted to the Western way of life and repelled by Western hypocrisy and the way that Western countries behave abroad. It's very well written but is easy to read as it quite short.

5 out of 5 stars A work of spare beauty   August 18, 2010
Matty (Dorset , United Kingdom)
I had to read this for a course and wasnt looking forward to it, but the simple beauty of the prose and masterfully applied tension made it a thrilling and memorable read. There is none of the overt politicising I had expected. Nor is the story a thinly-veiled allegory of third-world dispossession. Instead the charming protagonist offers a personal and sad tale that beautifully illustrates the contradictions of multi-culturalism and American imperialism without labouring the point. A most pleasant surprise.

5 out of 5 stars Intelligent and thought provoking...   July 15, 2010
The Reviewer (UK)
The reality is that the book is not designed to fit into your standard "post 9/11" category. The unique one-sided narrative is refreshing and interesting to read; the plot is clever and subtle and gives you a thoroughly fascinating insight into the process of radicalisation.

3 out of 5 stars A very different tale   May 30, 2010
Marie Judd (Stev, UK)
Well i just finished this one - its a nice short read which i read in 2 days. I am finiding this one hard to review and describe to be honest. It is written by one man telling his story of his young life, talking to an Americian sitting in a cafe. It tells of his long love with erica, a young americian girl, about his work and about the war in America and Pakistan.
The ending is bizarre and there is no obvious conclusion to the story - you have to make your mind up really. Its not a book i would read again but it is a book that leaves you thinking! 7/10 for me

5 out of 5 stars amongst the best I have ever read   May 17, 2010
william schock (uk)
First and foremost this is a thriller. I read it in 4 hours (It is short)and I couldn't put it down. The tension in this book is amazing and you have to keep turning the pages to find out what happens next (Or happened last, depending on how you look at it). The characterization of Changez is suberb. He is an average human being but torn between two distinct ideologies. Must he live in his adopted present or must he return to his roots. The dilemma is echoed in the story of his lover Erica who, perhaps, makes the wrong decision. Changez finally decides where he wants to be and who he wants to be. But this involves being in conflict with the America that gave him so much. But who is most at risk in this conflict? It seems to be up to you!
