3 out of 5 stars could be thicker   June 19, 2010
B. Zabavnik (down town shepherds bush beneath the BBC)
AS a primer it is extremely tightly written in doubled text so as squeeze everything in and it gets everything in but will you spot it all or distinguish particular aspects? All good teachers like to build up an explanation and group items in families - but all families need space. Will you understand the concept of interogative overtaking? Or how much space to leave between your berth and that of a vessel flying two inverted blue cones? It is all there but it does not stand out. Working with river channels - you get all the signage but no explanation of why the river requires such signage - the physical geography is just assumed and you have to get on with it. As a lecturer once explained to me thicker tomes give more lucid explanations - this book needs more bulk. Try the RYA interactive tests on its interactive site and you will find gaps in your knowledge. Fill those gaps in before you take the test properly because remember it is timed and you cannot flick through fast enough for it to be an openbook test. Where you will find difficulty is the difference in the sound signals between inland and sea regulations. However the book does go into national differences and as more countries sign up there will be quite a few of those differences creeping in. Other than these primers your only other option is to get the full set of regulations at four times the price of this tome which is required if you are a normal vessel (defined as being over 20 metres long). there is one other wrinkle - not all the regulations are followed in the UK, more particularly the tidal thames.

This book is an excellent starting place for the novice. It clearly illustrates the signs and symbols you are likely to encounter on European water ways, as well as providing other essential boating information.
