| Editorial Reviews:
Product Description The seventeen year old Hornblower became infamous as soon as he stepped on board ship as the midshipman who was seasick in the Spithead, but things were soon to change. Amid battle, action and adventure he proves himself time and time again - courageous in danger, resourceful in moments of difficulty and decisive in times of trouble.

Start here... then follow happily with no need of reviews... August 31, 2010 ADB (Andorra) Sail with young Horatio... the DVD series were a slight disappointment (lack of money?)... but the books are still great... specially the first one's... but even if the late on the series are more "predictable" they are still worth the read...
The father of so many other "naval heroes".
A CLASSIC

Superb Historical Fiction August 8, 2010 R. J. Richardson (London) The Hornblower books of CS Forester set the standard by which all historical fiction has to be judged. The plots are genuinely gripping and exciting, the historical (and nautical) detail is spot on, the prose is elegant and easy to read and while some of the minor characters are no more well drawn than they need to be to move the story on, Hornblower is exceptionally well drawn (and deeply interesting.
I first read the books over 40 years ago and still return to them from time to time.
One word of warning. Don't start reading Hornblower with these books but rather start with "Flying Colours, then The Ship of Line and the The Happy Return (available from Amazon.com at least in one volume). Although these books deal with the start of Hornblower's career they were written later and are more enjoyable as a retrospective explanation of why Hornblower became the man he did, which is what the author intended. This is especially true of Lieutenant Hornblower - the only one of the books not to be written from Hornblower's perspective. Moreover the very first book Mr Midshipman Hornblower, is a series of linked short stories not a complete novel.

As a long term C S Forrester fan, I can recommend this book, had'nt read it for a few years, but did watch the excellent series with Ioan Gruffud perfectly cast as Horatio Hornblower, and through the book we watch him mature from a scrawny 17 year old, who is bullied to a young man who was born for the navy, Also the series was very true to the books except for very minor changes which certainly did'nt spoil anything, Robert Lindsay plays Captain Pellow and is brilliant and the lovely Paul Copley plays Mathews a seaman of long standing, and now when I read the books ( I have them all) I can see these charactors come to life on the pages, go on, treat yourself, its pure nostalgia for a time gone by.
Hornblower June 3, 2009 Castelli Paolo Emilio (Genova, Italy) I'm an avid reader of "military and navy historical fictions" and may not be so impartial thogh I have no doubts about C.S. Forester. He is a real master and his books should find place in any readers' bookshelf. Young Hornblower is definitely worth reading at any age.

One of the best in its genre October 22, 2007 Didier (Ghent, Belgium) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I read the Hornblower-novels after I had read all Aubrey & Maturin-novels by Patrick O'Brian and to me the latter are better still, but that doesn't alter the fact that all 3 novels contained in this omnibus ("Mr Midshipman Hornblower", "Lieutenant Hornblower" and "Hornblower and the Hotspur") are cracking good adventure stories, set in an age when Britain ruled the waves and there was plenty of action for any seagoing young man.
Hornblower is perhaps a trifle too perfect (apart from being seasick at times, it sometimes seems the man is simply without fault), and now I think of it that's one of the reasons why ultimately I prefer Aubrey & Maturin, but that's a minor quip and above all should not keep you from buying these splendid books. I enjoyed them immensely!
