Product Description
A confrontation between a radical environmentalist group and a Danish cruiser has forced Austin and colleague Joe Zavala to come to the rescue of a shipful of trapped men. But when the two of them investigate further, they discover that something far more sinister is at work.

Amazon.co.uk Review
There is something blithely inventive about White Death that is unusual in this mildly macho thriller about professional hard men doing their thing. The book starts with two preludes--one about Basques fleeing the Inquisition with relics, another about Nazi aeronauts coming to grief in the Arctic--and almost at once skitters off to deal with the heroic Karl Austin rescuing Danish sailors from a sunken cruiser. Apparently, the cruiser was sunk by the anti-whaling activists its crew was trying to arrest, but Austin, charmed by one of them, rapidly proves not all was as it seems. Meanwhile, other friends of his are investigating the death of a fisherman who had told them about giant hungry salmon in Canada... This is an up to the moment thriller that speculates intelligently about the biotech business, and inventively about the nature of nationhood and what men will do for the people they regard proprietorially as theirs. Austin in particular is the focus of nail-biting action and suspense sequences whether racing through sea caves, dog sledding through New York or sword fighting in a Zeppelin. --Roz Kaveney

2 out of 5 stars A fishy tale, Innuit !   June 9, 2010
tallpete33 (London, UK)
Take a square jawed marine engineer, GM killer fish, a pre-war German airship, beret wearing Basque billionaire, mad scientist and some evil Eskimos. Stir well, add in some guns and a pretty woman or two and you have White Death.

Starring the inimitable Kurt Austin and his smart Alec sidekick Bobby Zavvala, the shady Oceanus corporation is drawn to the attention of Austin's NUMA agency following a mysterious collision between eco warrior Marcus Ryan's ship and a Danish navy cruiser near the Faroe Islands. Helping retrieve survivors from the ocean floor led Austin to a stay nearby where he learnt more about the mysterious corporation and did some digging himself. His colleagues are also puzzled why local fish stocks have all but disappeared - puzzled until they see with their own eyes the razor toothed and enormous psycho salmon pulled out of the sea by a local fisherman.....

It all starts to get a bit silly really, with sadistic Eskimos, dog sled races through Washington and Kurt casually shrugging off numerous Oceanus assassins before teaming up with a suspected (but very wealthy) Basque terrorist to exact revenge on the company. None of them think to call each other or the police during their deadly escapades and the NUMA agency seems to have carte blanche to blow up whatever they fancy wherever without consultation. OK, it's a work of fiction, but at times the jazz loving (pur-lease) Austin makes James Bond seem restrained and safety conscious. Despite being published as recently as 2003, the whole book has a dated feel to it with all the men being square-jawed broad shouldered super cool heroes and the bad guys having some sort of physical defect. I was half-expecting a woman to actually "swoon" in Austin's presence as he handed over a box of Terry's All Gold but mercifully that didn't happen.

A crazy and somewhat dated read which Cussler and possibly Ian Fleming fans with a vivid imagination will lap up but not for me.

4 out of 5 stars Another Gripping Adventure from the Author   July 25, 2007

Clive Cussler was born in 1931 and grew up in Alhambra, California. He attended Pasadena City College before joining the Air Force. He went on to a successful advertising career, winning many national honours for his copywriting. He has also explored the deserts of the American Southwest in search of lost gold mines, dived in isolated lakes in the Rocky Mountains looking for lost aircraft and hunted under the sea for shipwrecks of historic significance, discovering and identifying more than sixty. He is married with three children, and divides his time between Colorado and Arizona. His credentials as a best selling author cannot be doubted and he has a large `stable' of best selling adventure novels.

Yes some of Clive Cussler's books are a little far fetched, to say the least, but surely that is not a negaative thing. Most people read to get away from their everyday life and yes, sometimes to go into a little world of their own. If an adventure story is a little far fetched, so what, it is all part of the enjoyment, after all the books are novels and not meant to be taken to seriously.

White Death is another adventure novel featuring Kurt Austin, leader of the NUMA Special Assignments Team and starts with a confrontation between an environmentalist group and a Danish cruiser, not an earth shattering confrontation in itself, but something that is going to escalate into something far more serious . . .
