Disappointing. August 30, 2010 Paul B (UK) I'm a great fan of Michael Connelly and generally devour his output because he is an excellent thriller writer whose books are well written and always offer the reader some excitement.
Unfortunately, this is not his best or anything like it. It seems to be writing by numbers and none of the protagionists were particularly interesting or engaging.
Could do better would be a school report on this novel.
Oh dear. August 22, 2010 Gargoyle (Scotland) The more prolific Connelly gets the less convincing and engrossing his novels become. This is a limp effort compared to previous tours de force and I note with chagrin that his latest Mickey Haller book again involves a tie-up with Harry Bosch. I asked him not to do that after The Brass Verdict which just scraped over the line in the end.
Did he listen? No he didn't! Will I pick up another Connelly? No I won't.
If I came upon this one having never read a Connelly I should consider it lacking in action - and lacking in snappy dialogue too. It's plain boring. What a shame but thanks for the ride MC!
oh hum July 27, 2010 P. Gill (Pontyclun, South Wales) Connelly is usually good value for money but this is a poor, lazy effort. whilst not awful, its just not that good. it has all the ingredients for a good novel but it reads as though connelly's eye was on a different ball. very 2 dimensional and just uninspiring and by the end i'd long lost interest
Below par July 27, 2010 Tall but harmless (UK) Have to agree with those who were disappointed in the quality of this offering from the usually reliable Connelly. The relationship between the two main characters (FBI agent and journalist) just doesn't ring true, nor do the journalist's reactions to the gruesome death of a colleague. Lacks the emotional power of the best American crime fiction, alas.
The Scarecrow July 11, 2010 Mr. G. J. Pike An excellent book by an accomplished author. Michael Connelly's background in journalism and knowledge of the police and judicial process in America gives him the ability to add credible facts and thus embellish his story line well. Presumably such story lines are based on cases he once reported. The thought that at anywhere in our complex society there could be such evil is perhaps disturbing, let's hope that it will remain in fiction. I wait with anticipation for another Connelly novel to be absorbed by.
